Day trip to Shakhrisabz
Over the mountain pass to Timur’s birthplace, with a stop for lunch in a village that does one thing well.

Ninety minutes each way over the Takhtakaracha pass. Shakhrisabz has the remains of the Ak-Saray palace, which was once enormous and is still startling, plus a bazaar worth an hour.
We leave at eight and are back before dark. Lunch is in Miraki, at a roadside place that grills lamb and nothing else.
