How it began

Our story

Four chapters, from a family courtyard off Registan Street to the house that welcomes you today.

The house was built in 1954 by our grandfather, a carpenter who worked on the restoration of the Shah-i-Zinda. For forty years it held one large family; in 2016 we opened the gate to travellers and kept everything else the same — the vine over the courtyard, the low table where breakfast is laid, the ganch plasterwork in the front room.

The rooms

Eleven rooms, no two identical. Six look onto the courtyard, three onto the terrace, two are on the upper floor with a view over the neighbourhood rooftops toward the Bibi-Khanym dome. Every room has air conditioning, a private bathroom, blackout curtains and a kettle with green tea from the Siyob bazaar.

Breakfast

Served from seven until ten in the courtyard, or in the dining room when the mornings turn cold. Non, apricot jam, tomatoes with dill, eggs cooked to order, and coffee that is genuinely good — we import the beans, which in Samarkand is not a small commitment.

Getting around

The Registan is a ten-minute walk, Gur-e-Amir five, and the Siyob bazaar fifteen. The airport is twenty minutes by car and the high-speed train station about the same. We meet guests at either, at any hour, if you tell us the number.

The building began as a family home a few minutes' walk from Registan, laid out around a courtyard that still shapes the plan today.

Restored room by room
Ganch plasterwork, carved doors and the original timber ceilings were repaired by Samarkand craftsmen rather than replaced.

Opened to travellers
The first rooms welcomed guests who wanted to wake up inside the old city instead of driving into it each morning.
